"Serendipity" means finding valuable or agreeable things not sought, and the ACO offers the chance to experience it firsthand. Each season we choose several unique performances we believe will enhance our audiences' creative experiences. The 2007-2008 Serendipity Series includes: OZARK HISTORY: A LONG ROW TO HOE
History was never harmed by having fun exploring it. Area actor/writer/historian Paula Thompson has created a delightful and insightful look back with special funding by the WAL-MART Foundation. As living history character Granny Breeze, Thompson takes audiences back to her life in the 19th century Ozarks: the good, the bad, the funny, the sad. From outhouses to house-raisings, from making soap to making do, early Ozarkers were a hardy lot.
BUTCHER AND DETELS: FOUR HANDS IN CONCERT
Well before the days of sound recording, four hand piano arrangements were the medium through which most people heard the classic symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and others. Betty Butcher and Claire Detels, both accomplished musicians as well as seasoned educators, recreate these four-handed recitals, peppering the performance with history and humor. The Butcher and Detels Duo will include the finest original duet compositions of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, as well as American classics from Stephen Foster to rock and roll.
CINDERELLA AND THE CHINESE SLIPPER
From the Bits ‘N Pieces Puppet Theatre comes the exotic, mysteriously beautiful tale of Cinderella and the Chinese Slipper. Based on the Mongolian version of the often-told tale, this story will come to life for the audience through giant, ten foot tall puppets. Complete with dancing, singing, and special effects, the audience will enjoy the colorful characters, and learn the common Cinderella theme—that kindness is its own reward.
BACH TO THE FUTURE NOVEMBER 10, 2007 7:30PM Touted as “The Bach that rocks,” Bach to the Future is an exciting classical/jazz quartet that takes the master’s melodies and transforms them into the music of the future. Using brilliant, original arrangements of recognizable classics, the group plays cutting edge instruments like the Drumitar, the MIDI electric violin, the Violectra, and the Keytar synthesizer to help audiences experience a whole new look at Bach. Their special brand of music has been heard on numerous television and film productions; but nothing beats a live concert!
ARKANSAS WINDS: A MUSICAL HOLIDAY CONCERT
Once again this year, the Arkansas Winds will return to our stage and share their annual holiday tradition. This community concert band performs favorite selections of the season, including Leroy Anderson’s all time best-- A Christmas Festival and Sleigh Ride. Take time from your hectic schedule to relax and enjoy in an evening of musical delight!
El Secreto de la Lagartija
The fun of folktales from Mexico will be center stage when the Teatro de la Rosa performs for families. Founded in 2000 as Fort Worth’s only Hispanic theatre, this energetic troupe has already won numerous local and national awards for children’s theatre. Using hand-crafted masks, live music, and lots of audience participation, they will tell the tale of El Secreto de la Largartija (the Lizard’s Secret). Fully bilingual, the story is about a prince on a magical journey where he encounters giants and talking animals.
JACK MITCHELL’S BIG BAND
Turn back the clock and get ready to enjoy the music of the 40’s and 50’s; Jack Mitchell and his Big Band are making their way back to the ACO. Always a favorite, this award-winning ensemble will have you swinging to the swing and swooning to the ballads. A fifteen piece band full of big brass, wonderful woodwinds, and a terrific trap set, the Jack Mitchell Big Band will have you tapping your toes all afternoon.
TOADSUCK SYMPHONY IN CONCERT JUNE 7, 2008 7:30PM Taking their name from an historic Arkansas River crossing, Toadsuck Symphony has entertained audiences with their special brand of “newgrass” music for over 25 years. Drawing from a wide variety of musical influences, the five-piece ensemble has a solid reputation of variety. Playing everything from Beatles selections to their own version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” this eclectic concert will keep you guessing what’s coming next! The ACO is proud to be a part of this area's educational world through this series. Through offerings in theatre, music and the visual arts, we hope to supplement the curricula of the public and home school classroom with creative, inspirational possibilities.
